Road Crew: Misty Mountain Games – Madison, WI
From Forrest Aguirre
Next Saturday, July 30th, we’ll celebrate my first full day of being 47 by crawling through a playtest Dungeon Crawl Classics/Mutant Crawl Classics scenario. At noon, I’ll run “Planet Brainskull Attacks,” a 0-level funnel that is ready for playtesting – at least that’s what I’m claiming. Next, at 4 PM, I will run Part II, using survivors from the funnel or newly-generated characters, if needed. If you can only make one or the other, or even if you can just make a part of one, I’d love to have you there! I’ll find a way to slot you in. There will be (limited) schwag. I especially encourage those who have not yet played DCC to attend! Bring a friend, especially if they’re new to DCC/MCC, and we’ll see to it that they die a horrible death . . . um, I mean have a great time, too! Location is Misty Mountain Games, 4672 Cottage Grove Road, Madison, WI. I hope to see you there!
Kickstarter Update: Age of Cthulhu 9
It has been unlocked, the DCC RPG stretch goal has been achieved! Hop on over to the kickstarter to be able to get it when the kickstarters ends. More monsters for DCC RPG?! Thank you very much!
A PDF booklet with Dungeon Crawl Classics stats for 10 Cthulhu mythos creatures. Enhance your DCC campaign with the denizens of H.P. Lovecraft’s imagination! Adventurers will lose their minds over these new monsters.
Review: Feast of the Preserver
Feast of the Preserver from Shinobi 27 Games is often billed as a “survival horror adventure”, but that isn’t wholly accurate. It is more a mini-campaign than an adventure, weighing in as a 44 page PDF, there is a lot going on here…and all of it delightfully dark. There are probably 12-16 hours of game play here if players really dig deep and investigate all the opportunities afforded them.
Written for a party of 3-4th level PCs, this is not an adventure for a novice Judge. There are a number of twists and turns written into the storyline and, if run like a traditional dungeon crawl, the air of doom and menace would become lost. This adventure thrives on the helplessness of villagers, struck by an unknown plague, a raid for ransom by bandits, and the mysterious titular religious feast. Keeping solid notes and establishing a timeline to keep things running smoothly is recommended.
Once in though? Oh, what an adventure! Survival horror indeed! The players will need to be at their absolute sharpest to escape the hazards they face. It isn’t that the adventure’s threats are overwhelmingly powerful…but they are quite clever. This is an adventure that calls for brains as much as brawn and those seeking to “murder hobo” their way through it will most likely perish. Fools rush in…to a chipper shredder.
The quality of the material itself is also top notch: the interior art is dark and evocative, the writing reminiscent of the classic Hammer films, and the new material presented can easily be pulled and dropped into an ongoing campaign (who doesn’t want a new “dark” patron). This is an adventure that can be dropped into any ongoing campaign of appropriate level or one that can be hinted at and built towards from campaign start. The tools are provided to make players more than a little leery of what dwells in the darkness.
$9.50 gets you a hard copy and the PDF and it is very much worth it.
DCC Adventure Contest
Gamehole Con has announced a DCC Adventure contest as part of their newly formed “Rodneys”, the convention’s new game design contest. This year, Goodman Games will be publishing the winning adventures and so DCC has a category of its own. The DCC adventure submissions are to be based upon the images of the DCC Judge’s screen. Full details may be found at the Gamehole Con – Rodney’s page.

Skeeve, a magician‘s apprentice and wannabe thief from the dimension Klah, tries to learn the basics of magic from Master Magician Garkin for several months but to no avail. Skeeve can do little more than float a feather or light a candle using magic. Wanting to convince Skeeve that being a thief is not as good as being a magician, Garkin summons a demon. During the summoning an assassin barges into the hut, and Garkin and the assassin kill each other. Skeeve is left alone with the demon. To Skeeve’s surprise the demon politely introduces himself as Aahz. Aahz explains that demon is slang for Dimension Traveler. He further explains that there are thousands of dimensions with different races in them, and that he is from the dimension of Perv, making Aahz a Pervect, while Skeeve is a Klahd. Aahz is a master magician like Garkin but loses his magical powers during the summoning ritual (due to a practical joke played on him by Garkin) and becomes stranded in Klah. Aahz volunteers to take Skeeve on as his apprentice and teach him magic. The pair then embark on a series of misadventures.
