H. P. Lovecraft was a master of pulp horror and, love him or hate him, his influence on modern culture cannot be ignored. Name-dropped by such authors as Stephen King and Robert Bloch; referenced on such television programs as The Night Gallery, The Venture Brothers, and Supernatural; and influential in comics such as Bat-Man (yes, Arkham Asylum really was a nod to Lovecraft) Lovecraft’s reach is long indeed. His communication and collaboration with other greats such as Robert E Howard, Clark Ashton Smith, and the rest of the “Lovecraft Circle” have shaped fantasy and horror for generations.
Tonight we merely skim the surface, discussing two of Lovecraft’s works, delving into the squamous side of things we discuss Dagon and The Shadow Over Innsmouth.
Welcome to the Sanctum Secorum podcast. In this episode we examine two of the works by Appendix N author, and literary legend, H. P. Lovecraft and match them up with The Portsmouth Mermaid from Daniel J. Bishop and Purple Duck Games.
In addition, we have bonus content to bring to your game: magic items, weapons, and so much more…after the jump.
Dark Acquisitions
There is a great deal of new material to bring to the table based on this story. Indeed, this is a special moment as with the release of this episode’s companion we surpass 100 items of content released to the DCC community from Audios to NPCs, Monsters to Weapons, and Classes to Patrons. In honor of this landmark, our one hundred and first item is our first adventure penned by David Baity!
Below is a list, by category and author, of what has been added to the Dark Acquisitions page by the Keepers of Mysteries, based on this show. Further contributions from friends of the library will also be found there as they arrive.

They also have readings of some short stories. “Shadow Over Innsmouth” is one, although it’s in prts and I think they have one more to do for that.
Thank you for all of the kind words!

Hey there gang, finally had a chance to drop you a line and tell you how much I’ve been enjoying the podcast. always informative, entertaining and chock full of ideas. David’s Spotify playlists are a great addition to some my games. I hadn’t clued in to the Companions until this last episode, but I’ll be downloading them all tonight for sure.If you need any art for the upcoming Compendium, I can donate some to the cause if my schedule allows it -David’s got me pretty busy these days! 😉 Keep up the great work lady and gents!
Great to hear that you’ve been enjoying it. As for art for compendiums? We’ll certainly throw some information your way. Out next piece is Clark Ashton Smith’s “The Maker of Gargoyles”. We’d love an art submission from you any time though. 🙂
