Tales from the Sanctum

Card Catalog

Welcome

The Sanctum Secorum podcast plumbs the depths of Appendix N as it applies to DCC RPG. Each show reviews one piece of Appendix N media — be it literature or film — and then discusses how to bring aspects of it to the table for your DCC game. We explore how the selected piece might already easily fit into particular modules and DCC settings, and we highlight one specific DCC module that really ties into the Appendix N material.

Sanctum Secorum Reading Room – Tuesday, Feb 28 at 9pm EST

The Keepers of Mysteries return to the Goodman Games Twitch channel with an all-new season of The Sanctum Secorum Reading Room! This month, Jen and Bob Brinkman explore and discuss Armor, by John Steakley.

Armor is the story of humanity’s war against an alien race whose foot soldiers are three-meter-tall insects, referred to in the book as “ants”. It is also the story of a research colony on the fringes of human territory which is threatened by pirates. The two sub-plots intersect at the end, with each providing answers and insight into events of the other. Join us and find how this book connects to Appendix N…

The Sanctum Secorum Reading Room: The First Book of Swords

Join two of our Keepers of Mysteries as they examine The First Book of Swords, by Fred Saberhagen.

The books are set far into the future. Approximately 50,000 years before the story, sometime during the third millennium, mankind was almost driven to extinction by a global apocalypse brought on by a nuclear World War prior to the events in Empire of the East. By the time the events recorded in The Books of the Swords occur, ARDNEH has passed into legend, worshiped as a benevolent god.

The gods of the Swords universe are based on various mythological deities, with most coming from the Greco-Roman and Hindu pantheons. They are elements of human hope and imagination that were made real approximately one thousand years after the destruction of ARDNEH, when a group of humans donned Mark VII suits created by ARDNEH and a djinn as a possible defense against demons. The gods, having become bored with mankind, created Twelve Swords of Power, and scattered them throughout the world, as a grand game of survival of the fittest to be played out on earth.

Content from Ugandan Game Designer, Ashraf Braden

Sanctum Media, in its partnership with Ugandan game designer, Ashraf Braden, has released the first in a line of DCC micro-releases. To be released monthly, each of these mini-zines is a single, double-sided page, appropriate for printing and folding.

The first release is the Kakondo, a monster torn from African urban legends and folklore. The Kakondo prey on the life energies of sleeping children, and are whispered of often in boarding schools in Uganda. Filling out the write-up is a short write-up on the yakoma, a sickle-sword historically used in the region.

Ashraf has been working on the next few months of releases, and there are other potential projects in the works, beyond the scope of we here at Sanctum Media, that are all quite exciting. So, join us in celebrating new content from a new voice in the RPG community.

All of Sanctum Media’s proceeds from the purchase of this, and future releases created by Ashraf, go directly to the author. You can purchase it here!

The Sanctum Secorum – Season 3 Premiere Tuesday, January 10th (9pm EST/2am UTC)

At long last, Keeper Marc Bruner has returned from his voyage to a dreamlike world underneath a dying sun. The library doors of the Sanctum Secorum are once again thrown wide as the Keepers of Mysteries explore The Dolphin Cross, an unfinished work by John Bellairs, discussing how best to incorporate its ideas into your DCC RPG table.

We look forward to seeing you all over on the Goodman Games Twitch channel!

Contributors and Submissions Wanted

Hey everyone, with the Sanctum Secorum zine returning as a quarterly in 2023, I thought I’d reach out and explain what we are all about, and see if anyone else wants to pitch in.

From the get go, the zine has always been, and continues to be, absolutely free. It is all in support of the community and no money changes hands. This isn’t about working for “exposure”, it is about giving something to the community that supports us all.

There are already plenty of ways to get “seen” in the DCC community. Artists can bring their portfolios to conventions, authors can get in front of Joseph simply by creating something and submitting it for FREE DCC 3rd party licensing. Flat out, nobody in the DCC community NEEDS to do anything for anyone else in order to get exposure.
