Hey everyone, with the Sanctum Secorum zine returning as a quarterly in 2023, I thought I’d reach out and explain what we are all about, and see if anyone else wants to pitch in.

From the get go, the zine has always been, and continues to be, absolutely free. It is all in support of the community and no money changes hands. This isn’t about working for “exposure”, it is about giving something to the community that supports us all.

There are already plenty of ways to get “seen” in the DCC community. Artists can bring their portfolios to conventions, authors can get in front of Joseph simply by creating something and submitting it for FREE DCC 3rd party licensing. Flat out, nobody in the DCC community NEEDS to do anything for anyone else in order to get exposure.

Anyhow, this it isn’t a paying gig.

With that said up front, we are always looking for artists and writers who want to join our team – either on a regular basis or with one-shot submissions. In the past, all submissions were meant to be themed to a particular piece of film or literature but, with the relaunch, we will be expanding our remit in an effort to continue bringing the community great materials for free.

Sanctum only asks for a non-exclusive license to your work (ie, we get to use it, you also get to continue using and submitting it elsewhere) so that we don’t run into issues down the road later of needing to remove submissions.
What are we looking for?Writing

  • Adventure Reviews
  • Convention Reports
  • DCC Fiction (Oh yeah, we’ve published it in the past)
  • Gameable Content (monsters, classes, items, spells, etc)
  • Judge’s Tips
  • …and other cool DCC Stuff
Art
  • Anything DCC related
Yeah, flat out, we are ALWAYS hoping for art. Why? The Sanctum has normally relied on public domain and creative commons art. Because, while the in-house team can all write – but you’ll note there are not any real artist credits to our names. Frankly, with this being a free zine, we cannot AFFORD. We can only afford an editor because Jen Brinkman does the editing and doesn’t charge (she is awfully close after all). Layout? That’s just me and MS Word and, I know, it shows.

Now, it also bears mentioning that we don’t EXPECT that anyone is going to want to work for free. Writers and artists deserve to be paid and there is no pressure or implied obligation that anyone is going to answer this call. We are all members of the community, but none of us OWE our work to the community. It isn’t that I want to dissuade anyone from contributing, I just want everyone to know, up front, that this is merely a labor of love.

So, with all of that said and out of the way, if you want to join the team of the community’s only free QUARTERLY e-zine? Drop us a line at…
